- Abstract
The gastrocolic reflex occurs asymptomatically in the normal individual. It may be present in an exaggerated form, producing symptoms, in patients with diseases involving the gastrointestinal tract. Striking and consistent relief of symptoms produced by a hyperactive colic reflex was afforded by the use of a potent palatable topical anesthetic given by mouth.
