- Abstract
Evaporation is an important parameter for many projects related to hydrology and water resource systems, but measurement of evaporation is difficult and time-consuming. Although there are numerous empirical formulas and approaches, availability of climatic data limits their application across all locations. An indirect method using meteorological data offers a potential alternative. Focusing on the study area of Dharoi Reservoir in northern Gujarat, India, the authors obtained empirical relations for estimating daily and monthly evaporation as functions of available meteorological data such as air temperature, relative humidity, wind velocity, and hours of sunshine. These data, reflecting a 10-year period from 2001 to 2010, can be considered representative of the semiarid region of Gujarat. Various tools such as empirical equations, dimensional analysis, and regression analysis were used for assessing evaporation loss from open water surfaces. The method proposed here demonstrated reasonable agreement with pan evaporation data, as evidenced by its coefficient of determination.
