- Abstract
Contemporary works on empowerment focuses on promoting the freedom of the subject as an core component of recovery process. We propose in this paper to review the psychological difficulties associated with the exercise of freedom, as analyzed by existential and humanist psychology. Freedom, a source of fulfillment for the subject, is also a difficult exercise for each of us. In fact, it involves the confrontation of the subject with his own death, with solitude and with the quest of meaning. Therefore, the exercise of freedom requires the caregiver's attention and may in some case constitute the target of a psychotherapeutic work.
