- Abstract
There is an increasing interest in understanding the dynamics of precipitation occurrence in Northeast Brazil (NEB), especially in coastal regions, once the significant population is concentrated in this region. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the variability of extreme daily precipitation events (EEP) in the eastern region of Rio Grande do Norte State (RN), as well as to identify the synoptic environment related to EEP. Diagram of the mean excess function and quantiles technique were used in the selection of threshold (u) of an EEP. Those with precipitation above the 98th percentile (EEP98) were considered as EEP. Mann-Kendall and Pettitt tests were used for linear trend analysis. Fields of moisture convergence were used to compose the synoptic environment. The EEP98 records are consistent with the precipitation climatology, in which 75% were concentrated in the rainy season. The composition of the EEP98 events presented areas of maximum moisture convergence showing signs of the presence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and easterly waves disturbances. The EEP98 at Natal presented more intense in the last thirty years; however, the frequency remains the same.
