- Abstract
In recent years, there has been a global trend towards the consumption of foods that provide beneficial effects for health. The main research shows that the use of bioactive compounds derived from plants as a source of functional ingredients in foods may reduce the risk of various cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. These benefits have mainly focused investigations to characterize different types of fruit and content of specific antioxidant compounds; however, most have focused on temperate fruits. Therefore, this review focuses on exposing the content of bioactive compounds in tropical fruit showing its benefits on human health through their possible use in agro-food products.
