- Abstract
The objective was to evaluate the effect of two methods of extraction of semen: artificial vagina (va) and electro-ejaculator (eey) in the sperm quality and ejaculation of Sahiwal bull. Fresh semen volume (Vs, mL), pH, mass motility (Mm, %), concentration (Ce, 106 Spz/mL), viability (Imp, %), vitality (Ve, %), normality (Ne, %), and integrity of the acrosome (Ia, %) were analyzed. There were 48 collections (equal number per experimental group), two times/week, of eight stallions (age: 24.54 ± 0.67 months, weight: 482.33 ± 38.88 kg and scrotal circumference: 32.54 ± 3.22 cm). The bulls were fed on grass, with free access to water and mineral sales. With va the following results were obtained: Vs=4.28 mL, pH=7.02, Mm=84.17%, Ce=928.71 Spz/mL, Imp=58.36%, Ve=76.35%, Ne=86.38%, Ia=93.95%. With the extraction method by eey the following results were obtained: Vs=3.98 mL, pH=7.02, Mm=92.29%, Ce=714.68 Spz/mL, Imp=41.78%, Ve=74.65%, Ne=85.25%, Ia=94.21%. It was demonstrated that the semen extraction method affected the sperm quality of the Sahiwal bulls where, the highest Mm was obtained by eey while, Ce and Imp were higher by extraction with va, without differences in the rest of the indicators.
