- Abstract
Anxiety or anguish defines a pathological state in which an individual's central nervous system (CNS) is activated due to a normal, exaggerated or pathological response to an internal or external cause or stimulus. Fear, unlike anxiety, refers to objects or facts that are specific and present. Anxiety is manifested clinically when the cerebral cortex loses its inhibitory capacity on the subthalamic centre, and there is a hypoactivity of the serotoninergic pathways. The manifestations of anxiety are accompanied by vagosympathetic symptoms like tachycardia, tachypnea and arterial hypotension. The therapeutic objective consists of resolving the triggering cause, relieving the symptoms and obtaining a good level of effectiveness in the treatment. Pharmacologically, it is treated with anxiolytics like the benzodiazepines and antidepressants (tricyclics, SSRIs). The treatment response tends to be high.
