- Abstract
Natural radioactive concentration analysis was carried out in the sand sediments that were collected from the shallow inner shelf region of an ecologically sensitive mangrove forest area at Krusadai Island in Gulf of Mannar near Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. A NaI (Tl) detector based gamma ray spectrometer was used for analysing the samples. The Activity concentration of the primordial radionuclide U was below detectable limit (BDL) for all the locations, Th had the range between BDL to 27.81 ± 8.9 Bq/kg while K had the range from BDL to 413.13 ± 49.6 Bq/kg. The other radiological parameters were calculated and all are found to be well below the prescribed limit. The study concludes that the Krusadai island mangrove forest region as a radiologically safer region for the endemic biota.
