- Abstract
Much has been written in the health care literature about consumers who engage in "doctor shopping." This paper explores a logical extension of this perspective by analyzing consumers who engage in the institutional equivalent, "hospital shopping." Data presented here show differences in how consumers with different characteristics select hospitals. More importantly, when consumers shop for different types of hospital services (e.g., general care, specialty care or emergency care), they use different criteria in their choices. Implications for hospital marketing and institutional medical care provision are offered.
