- Abstract
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious depressive disorder that can occur following the birth of a child. It knows no boundaries in the families it affects, and for the most part has no known cause. The most severe issue in dealing with PPD is that patients are uncertain of the associated signs or symptoms and thus do not seek timely assistance from health professionals. Although it is normal for many individuals to feel overwhelmed and anxious after childbirth, PPD sufferers have more extreme thoughts. In some cases mothers with PPD have thoughts of harming themselves or their child. This paper looks at the education that every expectant family should receive regarding PPD.
