- Abstract
Brief Background: Orthodontics combined with alveolar decortications, ostectomy and bone grafting can accomplish rapid tooth movements, thus accelerating the process. This is known as Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (AOO). Wilcko et al reported that a surface-computed tomographic evaluation of corticotomized patients clearly showed a transient localized demineralization-remineralization process consistent with the accelerated wound-healing pattern of the regional acceleratory phenomenon. By the year 2000, collaboration between Wilcko and Ferguson resulted in a copious documentation of the OTE efficacy. They resolved much of the contention among the earlier clinicians by subjecting SAD and (P) AOO to meticulous analysis and rigorous standards of evidence based research. Thus the name "wilckodontics". THE PRINCIPLE of Wilckodontics is to induce constant internal bone strain by judicious tooth movement and transmucosal perforation to perpetuate the therapeutic osteopenic state thus inducing regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP) Surgically facilitated osteogenic orthodontics treatment can often be completed in one third to one fourth of the time required for traditional orthodontic treatment. Compared with traditional orthodontic treatment, this treatment has the obvious advantage of dramatically shorter treatment times, an attractive alternative for many patients.
