- Abstract
The use of Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connections in steel buildings has been a concept developed after the lack in ductility of structure was observed during the 1994 Northridge earthquake and 1995 Kobe earthquake in California. Subsequently, guidelines FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Academy) 350, Euro Code 8-Part 3 and ANSI/ANSI 358 are developed for design and detailing of RBS connections. In the present study, design of RBS, as suggested by several guidelines, is carried out and compared. A building with and without RBS is analyzed and designed according to Indian standard. Seismic behavior of steel frame with introduction of reduced beam section is also studied. Nonlinear time history analysis is performed and various parameters affecting time period, base shear, displacement and story drift are also compared under the effect of lateral loads.
