- Abstract
This study sought to find out the development of purchasing power among Middle Eastern women in the last decade by applying a case study approach to Iran. The first section is an introduction which gives an outline of the state of women in the Middle East. The study follows with a literature review which focuses on the development of economic situation of women in Iran, their aspirations and desire to take part in productive sector. The gender and cultural biases which prevent women from obtaining paid jobs are also under scrutiny. It has been revealed that few culturally-accepted jobs are allocated to women in Iran. However, due to alterations in gender power relations the situation has changed significantly as compared to previous decades. It has been identified that women with access to finances and higher mobility have high purchasing power. The factors that have facilitated women to obtain acceptable jobs are also discussed in the paper. The study further makes use of descriptive qualitative approach to obtain relevant data from 125 participants questioned - all of them employed women from Iran. The research concludes that the purchasing power among Middle Eastern women in the last decade has various trends in which are similar in Iran. The limitations of the study are connected to the fact that the sample size is rather small; therefore, the results may not be generalized and applied to a broader scale.
