- Abstract
Local pain management is a critical aspect of patient care in most dental procedures. Pain management is also of paramount importance to enable patient comfort which, in turn, results in patient compliance and satisfaction with the ongoing dental therapy. This overview of adjunctive equipment available today provides the practitioner an array of options to effectively manage the pain associated with dental procedures. We searched PubMed central for related topics from 1998 to July 2017. All studies and articles that compared novel techniques of administration of painless intraoral local anesthesia during extractions, root canal therapy, and other minor surgeries were selected for this review. Reduced post-operative pain and improved patient compliance (outcome) were evaluated on the use of the novel techniques. No significant differences were found between the various novel adjunct methods of administration of intraoral local anesthesia. Further, high-quality studies assessing the efficacy and cost-efficiency of various modes of administration are required to confirm the utility of advanced adjunct techniques for painless intraoral anesthesia.
