- Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and skills of dental professionals of Chennai on minimally invasive dentistry concepts. Introduction: Minimal intervention is a new concept that was introduced by Mount and Hume in 1997. They suggested that it was time for changes in the principles of operative dentistry. Minimal intervention in relation to dental caries involves a vast area of diagnosis, risk assessment, prevention, and control. The main goal of minimal intervention is to increase the life of the teeth, which was restored with less intervention. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey that involved a list of dentists practicing in Chennai was registered in the Dental Council of India. Following simple random sampling, 119 dental professionals were selected from three dental colleges. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the selected number of dental professional practicing in Chennai, and descriptive data in terms of frequency and percentage were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: Their knowledge about minimally invasive dentistry was found to be high. However, the use of preventive measures such as fluoride application, casein phosphopeptide– amorphous calcium phosphate, and other preventive strategies was found to be comparatively minimal among the study participants. Conclusion: The study reveals that the knowledge, awareness, and practice on minimally invasive dentistry are adequate. However, the implementation in clinical practice is less. Clinical practice should move toward a medical model of caries management with respect to early detection, prevention, and preventive dentistry.
