- Abstract
The aim of this review is to study about hard tissue laser application in dentistry. The word LASER is an acronym for “Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation.” The laser has various hard and soft tissue applications in dentistry. In the past two decades, there are various research studies about laser application. Various lasers have been introduced for the treatment of oral diseases and their applications in dental clinics. Technological advances and improvements have increased the choices of the available laser systems for oral use. In hard tissue application, the laser is used for caries prevention, bleaching, restorative removal and curing, cavity preparation, dentinal hypersensitivity, growth modulation, and for diagnostic purposes, whereas soft tissue application includes wound healing, removal of hyperplastic tissue to uncovering of impacted or partially erupted tooth, photodynamic therapy for malignancies, and photostimulation of herpetic lesion. Use of the laser proved to be an effective tool to increase efficiency, specificity, ease, and cost and comfort of the dental treatment. Scientific review has touched various aspects such as the historical landmarks, luminaries behind several landmarks in the invention of lasers in a chronological order, and hard tissue lasers along with dental operating microscope and magnification has made practice of restorative and microsurgery facile and due to its versatility have found numerous applications extending to almost all aspects of restorative dentistry and minor oral surgery.
