- Abstract
Introduction: Dental caries reflects the oral hygiene status of an individual. Proper brushing is very essential to maintain a healthy oral cavity. Left handers have a tendency to brush the right side of the teeth more vigorously than the left side and it is vice versa for the right handers. Hence, the aim of the study is to evaluate the changes in dental caries status among left- and right-handedness and to find out if there is a relationship in the prevalence of dental caries between - and lefthandedness. Materials and Methods: A total of 35 left- and right-handed individuals each are included in the study. An intraoral examination is done to assess the presence or absence of dental caries in the patient's mouth based on G. V. Black's classification. The findings are tabulated and statistically evaluated. Results: There was no statistically significant (P > 0.05) difference between right-handedness and left-handedness and the prevalence of dental caries although there was an upward trend in the presence of dental caries in the right side for the right-handed individual and vice versa for the left-handed individual. Conclusion: From the above study, it can be concluded that there is not much of a difference in the efficacy of maintaining the oral hygiene in terms of dental caries between right- and left-handed individuals. Since there was a difference in the mean between the dental caries in the right- and left-handed individuals, a larger sample size might probably bring out a statistically significant value.
