- Abstract
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of periodontium. It is associated with an increase in oxidants level and a defect in the total antioxidant activity of saliva. It has been postulated in the literature that the damage from oxidants can be modulated by the presence of antioxidants, through the mechanism of electron transfer. Antioxidants are mainly found in fruits and vegetables that can neutralize oxidants or free radicals by donating an electron without becoming unstable themselves. It has been observed although poor nutrition does not cause periodontal disease directly but the disease progresses faster and may be more severe in people with nutrient-poor diets. This review discusses the importance of nutrition as a protective shield against oxidative damage of periodontium.
