- Abstract
Buccal film is an alternative to tablets, capsules, and syrups for pediatric and geriatric patients who experience in difficulties of swallowing traditional oral solid dosage forms. It improve the efficacy of APIs by dissolving within minute in oral cavity after the contact with less saliva as compared to tablets, without chewing and no need of water for administration. Buccal film is suited for the drugs which undergo high first pass metabolism and is used for improving bioavailability with reducing dosing frequency to mouth plasma peak levels, which in turn minimize adverse/side effects and also make it cost effective There are so many methods to formulate fast dissolving film but solvent casting method is mostly preferred to formulate it, due to easy and low cost. This review reflects informationregarding formulation ingredients, technologies and evaluation tests employed in the preparation of buccal films.
