- Abstract
Objective To explore the correlation between periosteal (sPostn) levels and bone mineral density in elderly patients with hip fractures. Methods This study enrolled 108 elderly women with osteoporotic hip fractures and 106 age ̄matched women without fracture as controls. Clinical featuresꎬ bone mineral density (BMD)ꎬ and bone turnover markers including sPostn level were measured in 2 days after fractures. sPostn levels were followed up in 108 patients in 1 year. Results Initial levels of sPostn after fracture were significantly higher in patients than in controls. sPostn was correlated with BMD of the femoral neck (P<0 05)ꎬ β ̄ isomerized C ̄terminal crosslinking of type I collagen (β ̄CTXꎬ P<0 05)ꎬ and N ̄terminal procollagen of type I collagen (PINPꎬ P< 0 05) in the entire cohort. After multivariate analysisꎬ sPostn remained as an independent risk factor for femoral neck BMD. sPostn acutely increased from day 2 after the fracture sampled within 7 daysꎬ and then decreased and maintained at slightly high level in 360 days. The changes of sPostn positively correlated with the variation in β ̄CTX (P <0 05) and PINP (P <0 05) at day 7 after fracture. Conclusion High sPostn level is an independent predictor of low femoral neck BMD in elder women with acute hip fractures.
