- Abstract
This is an exploratory study and aims at exploring workplace harassment as a 'lived experience' of female employees in the Pakistani banking sector. This study is carried out in four cities of Pakistan that have different regional culture and gendered practices. The study used unstructured interviewing as a major technique to collect the field data. Field data was analysed through use of thematic analysis and constant comparison method. The study found that workplace harassment of female employees is a universal phenomenon which exists even in traditional societies like Pakistan. This study makes an important contribution to unveil the role of local gendered practices towards work place harassment of female employees. This finding is quite unexpected, keeping in view religious and cultural dominance in shaping the pattern of social life. In Pakistan, where female employees face a number of social, economic, and religious issues, this study may be helpful in addressing these workplace issues and can contribute to bringing about workplace gender equity and equality.
