- Abstract
Abstract: This study's purpose was to assess client adherence to dietary, fluid and medication regimens in African Americans (AA) diagnosed with end stage renal disease and to determine if females and older adults had more adherent levels. A cross- sectional, exploratory research design was used to collect serum potassium, serum phosphorus, and interdialytic weight gain (IDWG) from 85 AA participants. Neither potassium and phosphorus levels nor IDWG differed significantly between females and males. Among older adults, however, potassium level and IDWG were significantly lower than among younger adults, but phosphorus levels were not. Developmental and social factors may influence adherence. To alleviate actual and perceived racial inequalities in health care, health care professionals need to consider the physical and social environments particularly for people living with chronic, life-threatening illnesses.
