- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the health behaviors related to vegetable and fruit intake, physical activity, and substance use among adolescents living in the Midwest. In addition, the study attempted to determine intervention points for public health researchers to improve health outcomes for adolescents, particularly adolescents of color. The study uses the socio-ecological model to make suggestions for public health practice. he total sample consisted of 113 adolescents aged 11-17 tears of age. About 45 percent of this sample was female, and the majority of this sample (58%) was African-American. There were statistically significant differences between males and females with regards to exercise. Males were statistically more likely to report exercising than females and females were more likely to statistically significantly to drink more alcohol than males. African Americans had a tendency to consume less fruit than other racial groups. The findings of this study suggest that more efforts are needed to develop targeted programs to help adolescents address the health issues that affect them individually. Limitations, future research, and implications for practice are discussed.
