Carlson, Julie A.
- Abstract
Acclimatization hurdles for persons new to the professoriate include balancing teaching loads with scholarship, professional growth, and service. Such hurdles are often heightened for women. If new female professors were more aware of the challenges they might face, they could better prepare mentally and strategically for their new positions. This qualitative focus group study examined issues of concern and acclimatization experienced by 18 new female faculty members during their first year of hire in a four-year university setting. Integrated findings from four focus groups revealed the most prevalent challenges for new female faculty members as not enough time especially for research, not feeling effective at teaching, and lack of institutional knowledge. A variety of additional stress factors beyond the workday were also identified.
