- Abstract
The Impact of Aging and Society on Cardiac Function and the Role of Physical Exercises: A Mini-Review. JEPonline 2020; 23(6):77-84. Although aging can lead to several diseases (including the risk of heart failure, myocardial infarction, and arterial stiffness) and related mortality, there are others factors that may also influence cardiovascular health in elderly adults. For example, there are climate and environmental concerns, vulnerabilities, socioeconomic conditions, discrimination, and racism. However, the primary concern is that the elderly adults spend the majority of their waking hours in sedentary behaviors that can lead to the risk of coronary artery disease and other cardiovascular events. Despite the benefits of physical activity and/or physical exercises, it is clear that a very small percent of the elderly adults adopt a physically active lifestyle. This is a significant health problem since the beneficial effects of exercise as medicine are considered a non-pharmacological intervention, and at times superior to drug intervention in preventing and even mitigating the effects of cardiovascular risk factors and other diseases associated with aging. Hence, it is essential that health care professionals consider the adults' social conditions to better understand the socially-related determinants of cardiac function and how different diseases interfere with regular exercise.
