- Abstract
Students who have multiple sexual partners are at risk for contracting STIs and HIV especially if there is no consistent condom use. The purpose of the study was to explore factors contributing to multiple sexual partners among students at the University of Venda, South Africa. The target population consisted of students who were having multiple sexual partners at University of Venda, one student was identified who later referred the researcher to other students through snowball. Respondents were selected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The major modes for having multiple sexual partners were lust, unsatisfactory sexual relationships, afraid of being hurt by dating one partner, and also for financial gain. Furthermore, the study found out that students engage in multiple sexual partnerships because they found out that their sexual partners were also having other sexual partners. Students indicated dating more than one partner since their needs could not be met by one partner but more different partners, thus putting them at risk of contracting STI and HIV if they engage in unprotected sex. The university should scale up intervention measures that will assist the students to learn more about risky sexual behaviours and the dangers of having multiple sexual partner.
