- Abstract
Continuing education for practising Nurses is very challenging because of the distance to learning environment, limitation of time, space and work schedule. The main objective of the study was to assess the nurses' attitude toward distance learning as a means of continuing education and its determinants. Survey research design was used in this quantitative study to reveal the attitude of Nurses and its relationship with related variables. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 164 nurses from Oke Ogun area of Oyo state. Data were collected through the use of questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument is 0.831. The results reveal that the attitude of the nurses towards the distance learning is fairly positive (X=2.58, SD=1.58). The nurses opinion about the acceptance of distance learning certificate is positively correlated with their attitude (r=0.203; p<0.05). The study also reveals that 57% of the nurses believed that distance learning certificates cannot be used for postgraduate admission in nursing courses while 47% agreed that Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria are not in support of distance learning in Nigeria. About 49% were not comfortable with distance learning for furthering their academics. The age and marital status had no effect on the attitude of the nurses. The outcome of the study showed that distance learning was not absolutely appreciated as a form of learning by the nurses.
