- Abstract
In recent years there has been increasing academic and clinical interest in developing evidence-based intervention and education for children ages 0 to 3. Advances in neuroscience and data emerging from brain imaging techniques have shown that an infant's developing brain is highly plastic and susceptible to permanent change through environmental influences, including music. If music in early childhood can be used more effectively to promote development, learning, health, and well-being, children will be better equipped to confront and overcome the many challenges that are part of life. This literature review brings together a selection of relevant studies from the fields of early childhood music therapy and music education to provide an overview of current research with this population. Available research has been organized into six important facets of child development: prenatal and neonatal music exposure, parent-infant bonding, attention development, communication and language development, physical development, and social development. The review concludes with a discussion of potential avenues for future music therapy research and challenges researchers face in these fields.
