- Abstract
Studies on polymer matrix continuous fiber reinforced composite additive manufacturing have shown a significant increase in recent years to improve the mechanical properties of parts produced by polymer-based additive manufacturing methods. In this study, producibility of polymer matrix continuous fiber reinforced composite parts was investigated for the composite additive manufacturing method. For this purpose, a system that can produce composite fiber using UV light curing epoxy resin as matrix material and continuous glass/carbon fiber bundles as reinforcement material has been developed. Photocurable epoxy resin in liquid form and fiber bundle are fed through a nozzle, the photopolymer is cured in the exit of nozzle with a coaxial UV light source that mounted on the head. As a result of the experiments, it has been observed that the matrix material completely encompasses the reinforcement material bundle, the curing process of the matrix material with the UV light source is provided and thus, composite fiber production can be carried out in the direction of the nozzle axis. Because of the opacity, carbon fibers block UV light, so the photopolymer resin at the inner section of the fiber bundle cannot be cured, so carbon fiber reinforced composite fiber production has failed. However, this shading problem was not observed with glass fiber reinforced samples. Thus, it has been demonstrated that glass fiber reinforcement material is more suitable than carbon fiber material in terms of producing polymer matrix continuous fiber reinforced composite parts by additive manufacturing method.
