- Abstract
Osseointegration of dental implants to titanium implant surfaces is a prerequisite for a successful implant treatment. The interaction between the hard and soft tissues at the inserted implant and the host site affect the success and longevity of the implant. Therefore, surfaces providing the desired response in tissues and cells should be obtained in terms of both form and surface texture when designing implants. Different materials and methods are being used to obtain surfaces increasing osseointegration. Titanium and its alloys are the most biocompatible materials for the living tissues currently since titanium is passive in aqueous environment. The chemical structure and surface roughness of implant surfaces play an important role in the biological changes following implantation. Currently used dental implant surface developing techniques involve roughening the surface rather than material deposition on the surface to obtain osseointegration. The methods used for such puproses include morphological, physicochemical and biological procedures. Enhancement of the surface characterisctics of the implants reduces both the osseontegration and prosthetic rehabilitation periods. The future of dental implantology should focus on controlled and standardized surface and chemical studies. This approach would ease the perception of implant surfaces and protein, cell and tissue interactions. In this review article, surface characteristics of current dental implants are aimed to be discussed with their biological effects. The inclusion of nano surfaces through controlled and reproducible technologies on current dental implant surfaces would aid in decreasing the osseointegration process and help make the implants behave like biomimetic structures.
