Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the sleep quality and relationship between the sleep quality with pain following the impacted third molar surgery. Material and Methods: A total of 100 patients between the ages of 18-40 with impacted mandibular third molars, who consented to participate in this study, were included. The patients were divided into two groups as 50 female and 50 male patients. The Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire was used to evaluate sleep quality of before and after surgery. The Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire was assessed preoperatively and on postoperative days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7th. In order to evaluate the pain levels, the visual analogue scale of 10 cm was used on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7th days postoperatively. Results: The mean age of the patients was 24.40±5.16. The severity of the postoperative pain was maximal on the first day. Postoperative pain levels of female patients were higher than male patients (p<0.05, p<0.001). Patients' overall quality of sleep deteriorated sharply on the first day and subsequently improved. Patients experienced high levels of postoperative pain had a higher frequency of significant postoperative sleeping problems. Conclusion: Surgical extraction of impacted mandibular third molars could be worsening of patients' postoperative quality of sleep and life in the immediate postoperative period. Patients should be informed about this before surgical extraction, and ways of reducing this untoward effect should be explored.
