- Abstract
In this study, the effects of R&D expenditures, number of R&D researchers, patents and innovation activities on export and economic growth is analyzed in Turkey through the period 1990-2013. In this study, two model predictions were made. First of all, ADF and PP unit root tests were conducted to determine the order of stationarity of the series and Zivot-Andrews test among the unit root tests allowing the structural break was conducted. In the second stage, the existence of cointegration relationship between the series was analyzed with Engle-Granger cointegration test. In the third stage, causality relations between the series were examined and Granger and Hatemi-J asymmetric causality tests were used in the process. According to Granger Causality test results, unilateral causality relation was observed in Model 1 from patent number to growth. For model 2, unilateral causality relation exists from export to share of R&D expenditures in GDP, from patents to export and from R&D labor force to export. Finally, in Model 1 according to Hatemi-J asymmetric causality analysis, which is a more advanced test, unilateral relations were observed between positive components towards growth from patent, negative components towards patent from growth and negative components towards growth from R&D. In Model 2, however, it was precipitated that there is a bidirectional relation between positive components of R&D labor and export; and there also is a relation between negative components from R&D labor to export and from export to R&D.
