- Abstract
High serum cholesterol levels (>240 mg/dL) increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Probiotics are defined as "live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host', and past in vitro and in vivo studies showed that some strains of probitotic microorganisms are effective in the reduction of cholesterol levels. The present review discusses the effects of probiotic microorganisms on reduction of cholesterol levels in vitro and in vivo.
