- Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the validity and reliability of Taylor-Helmstadter Pair Comparison Scale of Aesthetic Judgement developed by Taylor and Helmstadter (1973-1976) for 5 years. The sample consisted of 5 year age group 120 children going to 5 independent kindergantens in Kocaeli city center that are selected by the random sampling model. 50 of the children in the study group (40.8%) were girl and 70 (59.2%) were boy. When the education levels of the children's mothers are examined; 42 (%35.0) of them is primary school graduate, 29 (%24.2) of them is high school graduate, 45 (%37.5) of them is bachelor's degree, 4 (% 3.3) of them is post graduated. The father of 23 children (%19.2) of them is primary school graduate, 45 (%37.5) of them is high school graduate, 48 (%40.0) of them is bachelor's degree, 4 (% 3.3) of them is post graduated. Lawshe technique was used for the content validity in the study. Expert opinion was obtained for 16 items of scale, due to KGO value is not below 0.56, no item can be removed from scale. According to the results of this technique, the content validity index was 0.86. The reliability study of the scale found Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient 0.66. As a result of this study, it was determined that Taylor-Helmstadter Pair Comparison Scale of Aesthetic Judgement can be accepted as a valid and reliable tool. In Turkey, aesthetic works are needed from early childhood to increase the value given to art, and the participation in artistic activities is related to this. In the direction of this needs, researchers need to come together to develop a scale related to aesthetic judgment for Turkish children. Adaptation of the scales to Turkish is expected to contribute to the improvement of their aesthetic work.
