- Abstract
Transaction volume of equity shares in capital markets and stock prices are regarded as two important financial variables that are affected by each other. Because both transaction volume and stock market prices play an important role in investors' decisions to invest in publicly traded portfolios of capital markets. The transaction volume reflects not only new information on the stock market of investors in a market but also the one about changes in investors' expectations. The low transaction volume occuring in the markets indicates that the market is not liquid, while the high transaction volume shows that the market is liquid. Because of that reason and similar ones, the variables affecting the price of stocks must be correctly identified so that stability and confidence in the markets will dominate and investors can make healthy decisions. The study aims to conduct a comparative analysis on the dynamic relationship between closing prices and trading volumes of both Borsa Istanbul 30 (BIST 30) index which covers the largest 30 companies of Turkey and Deutscher Aktienindex (DAX) index which covers the largest 30 companies of Germany. The relationship between closing prices and trading volumes of BIST 30 (XU030) and DAX (GDAXI) indices were analyzed on index basis using the daily data of 5.17.2010 - 8.3.2017 period. Granger Causality Analysis was utilized to determine whether closing prices and trading volumes of both indices were related and if any, the direction of the relationship.
