- Abstract
Many physical educators, sport coaches, and parents still believe that strength training is not an appropriate activity for children to participate in because of safety and efficacy concerns. Specifically, they think that children who strength train will injure the epithelial plates at the ends of their long bones and that their connective tissues are not strong enough to handle the forces placed upon them during training. Additionally they think children are not psychologically or developmentally ready to engage in a strength training routine. This article discusses the literature regarding the safety and effectiveness of strength training programs for children. Programming guidelines, a sample lesson plan, and additional resources are included to help educators successfully implement a strength training program into their physical education class.
