- Abstract
Introduction: One of the most common disorders in children is functional abdominal pain. There are a lot of underlying reasons which may cause this symptom. One of them is intolerance of carbohydrates. In recent years there has been a significant increase of fructose consumption, especially in the pediatric population. There is a suggestion that excessive fructose intake may cause a food intolerance, which in turn can cause the symptoms of functional abdomi-nal pain. Aim of the study: The aim of this retrospective analysis was to find how frequently in children with abdominal pain fructose intolerance is present. Materials and methods: A group of 86 patients (55 girls and 31 boys), average age 10 and 2/12 years: girls 10 and 1 /12 years (from 2 to 17 and 11 /12 years) and boys 10 and 3/12 years (from 2 and 8/12 to 17 and 6/12 years) were hos-pitalized between November 2010 and November 2011 due to abdominal pain. In all the patients fructose hydrogen breath test was performed. Results: In the analyzed group of 86 patients, a positive test result for fructose intolerance was found in 69 (80.2%) patients (43 girls and 26 boys). In 24.6% children with fructose intolerance BMI index was less than 5 percentile, indi-cating malnutrition, in 4,3% patients BMI was higher than 95 percentile indicating obesity. Stool cultures for Candida albicans were positive in 40.5% of the children in the entire study group and in 42% of patients with fructose intoler-ance. Conclusions: 1. Fructose intolerance was found to be very common among children with functional abdominal pain. 2. Gastrointestinal colonization of Candida albicans can cause secondary fructose intolerance. 3. Fructose intolerance was more frequent in malnourished children than in those with overweight and obesity.
