- Abstract
Alopecia areata (AA) is a common form of non-scarring hair loss that can affect any hair-bearing area. Clinically, disease can present with many different patterns, from a single patch of hair loss to complete loss of hair on the scalp (alopecia totalis, AT) or over the entire body (alopecia universalis, AU). Nail abnormalities are frequent in patients with AA. Disruption of growth may involve all or just one of the nails. The purpose of our study was to determine the frequency and clinical presentations of nail changes in patients with AA. A total of 225 patients with AA were included in this study. Finger and toe nails were examined and nail changes were noted. Nail changes were found in 59 (26.2%) patients. Pitting was the most common nail abnormality (79.6%). Nail changes were more frequent in patients with the severe forms (54.3%) than in circumscribed alopecia (21%). High frequency of nail abnormalities in AA indicates that AA affects nail as well as the hair follicles.
