- Abstract
Background: Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) approach has only been clinically practiced over the last two decades. We wanted to find out how much research on the CO-OP approach, and in which functional disorders, reaches the highest level of evidence. In addition, we were interested in establishing which tests did the authors use to assess the effectiveness of the therapeutic program. Methods: We searched for articles in the PubMed database using the keywords "child" and "CO-OP" for the period up to December 2019. We included original quantitative English-language research into the review. We also searched for information on the diagnosis, age and number of children involved, as well as information on the tests used to assess progress. We determined the level of evidence of the selected publications according to the Muir Gray criteria. Results: We found 73 articles, of which 42 were on the use of the CO-OP approach in children. Of those, three were on the background for the CO-OP approach, four review articles, eight articles on the strategies used in CO-OP programs, two articles on parents' experiences, and five were announcing the protocol of the planned research. We found only six high-quality research articles and 14 case reports or case series in the selected set. Conclusion: There are few studies in the literature that meet the criteria for level II of evidence and confirm the effectiveness of the CO-OP approach in children with developmental coordination disorder, cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury. In most other articles, the authors report the results of cases studies or case series with a lower level of evidence.
