- Abstract
Introduction: the first publications about the intensive care workload survey through the use of scales date back from over thirty years ago. The importance of a workload daily recording has been confirmed by many studies which assert how it can help to determine the care requirement in relation to the patients' case mix. The objective of this study is to assess the nursing workload of the General Intensive Care Department in the University Hospital of Siena through the scale validated by NAS (Nursing Activities Score). Material and methods: since April 2010 the record of each patient's care weigh through NAS scale has been introduced in the General Intensive Care Department of the University Hospital of Siena. The observation ended on 31st December 2010 but the scale is still in use. Results and Discussion: at the end of the 9 months observation, 1730 surveys were conducted for a total of 197 patients; the mean age was 59 and the mean hospital stay was 8 days. The NAS examination has provided a mean detection score of 49.32 ± 16.01 DS. Conclusions: we believe that the survey of patients' care workload is important and fundamental for providing an adequate care and a clear picture in all care situations. In an individualized care model, NAS scale can be used to assign to each nurse an adequate and reasonable amount of assistance to be provided.
