- Abstract
The study purpose was to compare different volumes of self-massage and two stretching methods on shoulder flexion and extension range-of-motion. Twelve participants, both sexes, recreationally trained in self-massage and stretching techniques were recruited for the present study. Participants performed six experimental conditions: foam rolling (FR60 and FR120), static stretching (SS60 and SS120), and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF60 and PNF120). For each experimental condition, two baselines measurements were collected, and the mean baseline were used as resting values, and six postintervention measurements as: immediately (Post-0), 10-minutes (Post-10), 20-minutes (Post-20), 30-minutes (Post-30), 24-hours (Post-24), and 48-hours (Post-48). There was a statistical increase (p< 0.05) in shoulder flexion range-of-motion in Post-0 and Post-10 for all protocols; however, SS120 and PNF120 did not exceed the minimum detectable change in Post-10. Similarly, shoulder extension increased (p<0.05) in Post-0, Post-10, Post-20, and Post-30 but did not exceed the minimum detectable change in Post-10 and Post-20 for SS120 and PNF60, and Post-20 for PNF120. In conclusion, both techniques increase shoulder range-of-motion and have practical implications for both training and rehabilitation.
