- Abstract
In the past ten years, Schema Therapy gained a growing success. Developed within the framework of cognitive behavioral therapy, it integrates interpersonal; psychodynamic and experiential techniques coming from different traditions, such as Imagery Rescripting and Chairwork. Recent studies showed its transdiagnostic effectiveness. However, the heterogeneity of experimental approaches used in these studies does not allow to draw conclusions over the mechanisms that regulate change process. Literature proposed that ST works: i) changing early maladaptive schema into more functional ones; ii) acting on Modes; iii) through the therapeutic relation (i.e. limited reparenting) and iv) through a change in the meaning of early traumatic experiences, operated by Imagery Rescripting (IR). This article aims to provide a brief review of the literature supporting each of these hypotheses, with a focus on IR, which between the experiential techniques, appears to play a central role in the change process. Moreover, it is proposed that the meta-emotional problem (i.e. or "secondary" problem) is implicated in IR trans-diagnostic effectiveness and in ST change process.
