REVIEW: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EFFECTIVE COACHING AND ATHLETES' PERCEPTIONS OF THEIR OWN CAPABILITIES.
- Authors

- Abstract
The present review pragmatically examines the relationship between coaching effectiveness and athletes' self-efficacy. Modernisation of competitive sport has brought with it an ever growing emphasis on proficiency and excellence. Training is no longer solely confined to the physical domain, but also involves strengthening athletes' psychological attributes. Athletes competing in higher ranks of their chosen sport will at some point experience performance related anxiety, which may significantly hinder their performance. Therefore, one could argue that the difference between success or failure may be psychologically determined. This review documents some early studies that examined key psychological components responsible for determining successful athlete-related outcomes. In the light of existing empirical data, the importance of conducting this review lies on its ability to further examine, debate, and discuss the extent to what coaching effectiveness exerts an impactupon athletes' perceptions of their capabilities and skills.
