- Abstract
Participant observation is the most important point of ethnography. This participation is nowadays a theoretical problem because either disguised or total, it must be taken into account. In many researches in religion, researchers deliberately pretend to be members of the groups that are being studied, or they are initiated becoming a consequent part of the religion that they deepen. However, it is vital to understand that this is not a casual situation, and that it undoubtedly affects the research and must be taken into account. While it is true that since we start a research we are interacting and building the object of study, it should be clear that the object also changes the researcher, and that the ways we use to introduce ourselves «to others» affect the course of the inquiry and we are not always on the same side.
