- Abstract
Chronic low-grade inflammation of metabolic tissues is thought to be a major driver of obesity related insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. While changes to the immune profile in adipose tissue during obesity have undergone active investigation, alterations to the intestinal immune system have only recently been investigated. This review aims to discuss recent advances regarding immunological changes within the visceral adipose tissue and intestine during insulin resistance. We will highlight interactions between diet, gut microbiota, intestinal barrier and the intestinal immune system to show how this intestinal network is implicated in the overall manifestation of insulin resistance.
