- Abstract
Poor attitudes and stereotypical beliefs towards Home Economics Education (HEE) seems to be ripping off the values and needed skills for self-reliance and sustainable future among youths. The study examined some factors influencing the learning of HE and a way forward towards strengthening HEE at the Basic Educational Level (BEL) in Botswana. Data was collected from 424 Standard 7 students and 477 Form 3 Students (F3Ss') from 24 Government primary Schools (GPS) and 24 Community Junior Secondary School (CJSS) in South Central Region of Botswana. A mixed model approach was used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. Pearson correlations and Chi-Square analysis were used to test the stipulated hypotheses in their null form. Descriptive analysis was used to analyse qualitative data emerging from focus group interviews of 144 students from both levels. Findings indicated that stereotypical beliefs r (424)/ (477) = -.154"/- .204", p<.05 and attitude towards HE r (424)/ (477) = .449"/.298", p < .05; significantly influenced students willingness to learn HE. Besides, school level (std.7/ form3) significantly influenced how students felt about HEE. The lesser students stereotype beliefs at the higher BEL is, the better attitude and higher willingness they have towards learning the subject than those at the lower level. This could influence youth's preparation towards life skill acquisition. Recommendations were however made towards teacher preparation, effective teaching of HE from the primary school level, provision of quality material resources with government assistance at the BEL.
