- Title
The education of women: «La voce delle donne» (1865-1867) and the fight for women's rights in post-unitary Italy.
- Abstract
The issue of the role of women and their political, social and educational emancipation in the aftermath of the Italian unification is analysed through the lens of the journal «La voce delle donne» (“The voice of women”), edited between 1865 and 1867 by Giovannina Bertola Garçea. Inspired to «La voix des femmes» – published in Paris during the 1848 Revolution thanks to the initiative of Eugénie Nyboiet – the journal promotes a radical vision of the new political context created by national Unity, considered as a potential guarantor of those values among which also women's emancipation should find its place. From this point of view, the question of the right to vote was secondary to the necessity of acting upon the structure of knowledge itself and of building a new vision of the world which includes the women's dimension too. This attitude reveals a political audacity that was not so incisive when it came to dealing with the question of education, so that the original project of the journal, for which the link between education and consciousness had constituted the original focus, was doomed to failure.
