- Abstract
Energy is being used excessively by all sectors, and industry sector is in the first place. As a result of the increase in oil prices due to the crisis in oil after 1970s, its negative impacts on domestic income of considerably foreigndependant countries in energy have interested researchers, and they have handled energy together with the capital and labour as a production factor. It is observed that there are a great number of scientific researches that investigate empirically the relationship between total energy consumption and domestic income; however, because of the differences in research results, there has not been a consensus on the issue among the scientists, yet. Although it is counted as an important element in evaluating the development level of countries as one of the basic components of economical growth, and it provides to improve the living standards of people, urbanization could increse the amount of energy consumption, and hence cause energy crisis. The discussions on energy-domestic income relationship in literature, the fact that urbanization on the one hand contributes to economic growth, but on the other hand it increases energy prices and have pressure on economic growth, have revealed the necessity of doing an up-to-date study for Turkey. In this study, the relations between Turkey's economic growth, energy consumption and urbanization rate have been analyzed between 1965-2019. Short and long-termed relationships between the variations have been predicted by the model of autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL). In the recent years, when the increase of urbanization speed and energy demand in Turkey are considered, the significance of the study is revealed. In this respect, with this study, varied alternative models are presented to the policymakers, in order to develop long-termed policies of energy and urbanization in Turkey. The findings obtained, cointegration tests indicate that there is a long-term relation between the variations, and short-term error-correcting coefficient is meaningful. According to Toda-Yamamoto version of Granger causality tests, it is concluded that one-way causality exists from the growth variation towards urbanization. For a sustainable development, long-term energy and economy policies are needed to be planned and practised, and the problems caused by urbanization requires a solution.
