- Abstract
This article aims to explore the impact of Common Core on rural students. Common Core is a standardsbased reform initiative seeking to establish national accountability standards. Many states have redesigned state curriculums in response to No Child Left Behind, a federal mandate outlining goals for students by the year 2014. In response to No Child Left Behind, many state departments of education have adopted Common Core which outlines what students need to learn to be prepared for a career or for college. The standards-based reform system makes data comparison among states more interpretive and more comparative. This study analyzes the demographics of students in urban and rural populations and provides insight about both types of students; it also uses descriptive statistics to analyze the Common Core test data of both types of students. The results of the data analysis show a significant gap between urban and rural students. Although the implementation of Common Core is well-regarded and is expected to make significant improvements in the current educational system, administrators of rural school districts and schools should examine the needs of their students and provide those basic needs to make sure their students do not get left behind.
