- Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this evidence-based project was to increase nurse knowledge and awareness of the consequences of hyperglycemia in cancer patients, thereby increasing their capability to effectively intervene. Additionally, a clinical algorithm based on current evidence was developed and provided for participants of the program. Methods: A 2-hour innovative educational program was developed and piloted at the University of Florida (UF) Health Cancer Center at Orlando Health. This program addressed the etiology of hyperglycemia and its effects on cancer patients. Knowledge of hyperglycemia in oncology patients was assessed with a test before and after participation in the educational program. Results were disseminated to the UF Health Cancer Center's learning specialist team for consideration of incorporation into the oncology nurses' educational plan. Results: Overall, 100% of participants found the educational program "very effective" and deemed the clinical algorithm "very useful." Using a paired sample t test, there was a significant improvement in scores from pretest (M = 63%) to posttest (M = 80%) (P <.001). Overall, mean scores on the postintervention survey increased by 17%. Conclusions: Development of hyperglycemia during cancer treatment increases the risk of permanent diabetes in cancer survivors. Oncology nurses should be able to recognize complications associated with cancer and cancer treatment, including hyperglycemia. They should be capable of educating cancer patients about the possible effects of hyperglycemia and self-management strategies. By increasing nurse knowledge and awareness, through continuing education, oncology nurses will become more confident and empowered to provide timely interventions in cancer patients and improve overall outcomes. Nurses should utilize evidence-based strategies to incorporate nursing interventions in hyperglycemic cancer patients.
